Chat rooms without credit card
The theft of credit information has become something of a commonplace occurrence these days, as hardly a week goes by without a cracker breaking into the database at some large company.
However, that data is often held by one person, or a small group of people, or traded on underground Web sites.
Rarely is such information posted in such a public arena.
Regardless of where the theft occurred, Magdych said, it is symptomatic of a general nonchalance among some companies in regard to security.“Some people haven’t come to grips with the fact that security doesn’t stop with the firewall,” he said.
“A company may or may not encrypt its database, thinking that a password is enough protection.
Many of the victims of the theft seem to have purchased a cell phone online from or an AT&T Wireless reseller, according to MSNBC, which first reported the theft.
However, there is almost no way to say for certain where the stolen data came from, experts say.“It does look like the output from a Web-based form, but you can’t really tell where it was taken from,” said Jim Magdych, security research manager at PGP Security, a division of Network Associates Inc., of Santa Clara, Calif.
